There’s a Storm Comin’!

One recent day when I took this picture, the sky was a very close mirror to my heart. Our family is facing a storm not unlike one we passed through last year. Our youngest son is facing another surgery within the next month or so, and that was not one of our goals for 2016! The surgery he had last May fixes the problem for most who need it, but there are a few cases where it does not. As time goes on, the risks of not having another surgery outweigh the risks of the surgery itself, so surgery again it is. From a mother’s standpoint, I am not looking forward to the recovery process. I don’t want to see him in pain like that again.

On the flip side, I do have to tell you  that he is looking forward to watching cartoons for hours on end, and getting to order as much food as he wants from the cafeteria as often as he likes! He is also a fan of moving, breathing and swallowing, so he’s all for having the surgery.

But for me, the clouds are rolling in…clouds of fear, worry, and wanting to rescue him from the pain while knowing that I can’t. Is this a small taste of what the disciples felt in the boat during the tremendous storm while Jesus was sleeping through it all? They were afraid of being overcome and dying in the storm…I don’t think this storm is going to kill me! It might knock me around a little, but it’s not going to take me out. How do I know that? “I know the One in whom I trust” (2 Timothy 1:12). He has brought us through storms before, and He will again. He’s not frightened, wondering how all of this is going to turn out! His perspective goes far beyond ours, and He sees how it all works together in His grand design. Jesus calmed the storm with His words then, and He can calm the storm in my heart now. I simply need to trust.

So let go my soul and trust in Him

The waves and wind still know His name.
