Last week I took the pupper for a walk down by the marina. She had to stop to sniff and “read” the doggy billboard at one point. Looking up ahead I could see that the tide was coming in, and the view of the marsh had changed quite a bit from what it looked like two months ago.
There was even a bit of green beginning to show on one of those “islands.” What a welcome sight the color green is around town these days!
My view of this landscape would have taken all of my attention if it wasn’t for the doggy message board in the middle of the grass that required Pupper’s attention, and I would have missed discovering a new friend exploring the local breakfast bar!
Isn’t that the way of our Christian walk sometimes?
We know in our minds that God is always at work in both the big and the little things of life, but our focus is often so much on the momentous things that we miss seeing his hand in the details.
James tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17 ESV).
He didn’t say “every big gift” or “every important gift,” simply “every good gift.”
That means both big and little, incredible or ordinary, startling or assumed.
Here’s an example you may be familiar with. You got a job. Hooray, that’s a big gift! But what about all of the small gifts on the way to that final job offer? You learned about the job opening. You submitted an application. You got called in for an interview. Your references spoke well of you. All of the details seemed to fall into place at just the right time.
How did that happen? Was it just coincidence, or was God at work?
It’s amazing to me when I think back about all of the steps necessary to reach a certain goal, and I see the many ways that God was at work all along the way.
Maybe today is a good day to take a moment to thank Him for all of the ways, both big and small, He has brought you to where you are now.
Do you have an example of a time God put all of the details together to make something big happen for you? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!
