As I sat by the mountain stream that morning enjoying the serenity of the moment, I thought about the mist. It’s only there in the morning, until the sun warms the air and the water vapor disappears. It’s a beautiful sight, but you have to catch it at just the right time, or you’ll miss it!
James reminds us that our lives are just like that mist. We only have so much time here on this earth, and then we’re gone!
“How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog–it’s here a little while, then it’s gone” (James 4:14).
When we are young, life seems to stretch before us like an eternity. The older we get, the faster the time goes, and we realize more and more how much like the mist we really are. What will we do with the days that we’ve been given? Each day is a gift in itself, not simply another step on the way to somewhere else. Where are you today? What can God do through you right now?
So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. (Ephesians 5:15-17).
Not only is the life we’ve been given like the morning mist, so are the lives of those around us. We need to take the time to see the beauty in their lives! They are a gift as well, if only we would stop for a moment and take the time to see.
So…live with your eyes open! See what God wants to do through you, and appreciate the gifts He has placed around you. He is so good!
