Reality Filters

I could be wrong, but I don’t think you can find this cool lens filter for sale anywhere! I was sitting in my car while the rain fell and the wind blew, and this is what I saw. What was I looking at? My mind knew what was on the other side of the blurry windshield because I had seen it a hundred times before from that very same parking spot. My vision was affected, though, and I wasn’t able to see it clearly. Did that mean that reality on the other side was affected? Of course not.  Continue reading Reality Filters

This cute little nest sits in a barberry bush right in front of our house. It looks like a great location to me, if I were a bird building a nest! The sharp barberry thorns provide protection from predators, and once the leaves finish filling in, they will provide a visual cover as well. I don’t think this nest accidentally happened here, I think this bird went shopping for just the right spot! Continue reading Planned

Framework

What a jumbled mess! I’ve encountered this vine from South Carolina to New England. These tough, thorny vines are the bane of anyone wanting to clear a little land by hand. Cat brier grows as a single stalk from seed, and produces an underground bulb. The longer the plant survives, the more underground bulbs are created. Most of these bulbs just lie in wait. When you think you’ve removed all of the vines, either by cutting or pesticide, the dormant bulbs will send out new shoots! For this reason, cat brier is eradicated more efficiently with a shovel than with shears, the sooner the better.  Continue reading Framework

Disturbances

In honor of our local snowy welcome to spring, I thought I’d write another snowy post!

Looking out on a yard of pristine, freshly-fallen snow brings such a sense of serenity. Everything looks so peaceful, fresh, and clean (especially from inside, while I’m drinking a hot cup of cocoa).
