Spring weeds in the flower garden

Green

What do you think of this lovely patch of green in the middle of my flower bed? It’s got stunning visual texture, wouldn’t you say?

Patch of green grass and spring weeds surrounded by dirt

If you have a flower garden, I’d wager that you would identify ALL of this green as unwanted weeds.

But on this National Gardening Day, I beg to differ . . . simply because I see tiny blossoms that will bring color while I’m waiting for the bigger flowers to get here!

There are yellow rocket flowers that haven’t opened yet, along with tiny white blooming draba verna. If you look super closely, you may see the fuzzy green leaves of a baby black-eyed Susan.

This spring I’ve been focused on pulling out the grass that keeps popping up where it doesn’t belong. You may consider me a fool, but I’m leaving the flowering, seed-producing weeds . . . for now. I’ll pull them up eventually, don’t you worry! They’ve got shallow roots that give way easily enough when I’m ready.

In a few weeks the flower patch will be a sea of yellow rocket blooms and white shepherd’s purse swaying in the wind.

Last year’s lovely weeds

Once they fade, out they’ll come to make room for the showier flowers coming behind that I actually planted on purpose.

In the meantime, I’ll be attacking the green grass invaders!

My little flowers may look ridiculous to the neighbors, but no matter. God created them, and they bring me joy!

See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

Matthew 6:28b-29 NIV
