On our trip south this past summer, my husband and two of our children hiked up Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi. I drove up with our third to “rescue” them from the top! Once you’ve driven as far as you can, there is still a short hike to reach the summit. I took this picture from the top of Mount Mitchell, looking at one of the nearby peaks as the clouds were rolling in. That peak seemed to disappear as the clouds moved in, and even some trees nearby became hard to see. I knew they were still there, even if I couldn’t see them anymore. Crop Development
The wild black raspberries growing in our backyard don’t need any help from us. They’re quite independent, spreading out a bit more and producing a slightly larger crop every year. This year we may get enough to try a jam recipe!
The thing is, the berries aren’t all ready for picking at the same time. Some are black and juicy, some smaller and bright red, and some are smaller still, mostly green with barely a hint of red showing. Continue reading Crop Development

I know you’re wondering what snails have to do with running. Let me tell you about these cute, little, harmless-looking moon snails. Moon snails seek out clams and other similar ocean animals, drill a hole in the shell, and slurp out the insides. Still think they’re cute? Keep Growing!
Last year, my husband decided he wanted to expand his garden. To increase the area receiving direct sunshine, he hired someone to cut down four trees beside our house. This is what all four of them looked like last year. They’re all still out there, taller than I am! But they don’t all look like this anymore. I grew up in a family, both immediate and extended, that loves to sing. We had it all covered–soprano, alto, tenor and bass–and the harmony to bring it all together! Since we loved to sing, I also grew up in the church choir. I still love to sing! You won’t find me making any recordings, that’s for sure, but singing with a bunch of other people just brings me joy.
